HAIR FAQ

*All information is un-bias, provided by a customizer, for customizers.  I want my website to be as helpful and as informative as possible so I try to be as honest as possible.  If I am aware of a problem, I note it.  I am open to additional feedback and reviews also.  Feel free to e-mail me.

Q: What types of hair do you offer in your store? A:  I now only offer Nylon hair, as this is the type of hair My Little Ponies were made with.  Previously I have offered these hair types (so I am very famaliar with them): Kanekalon Jumbo Braid (also called super jumbo), Kanekalon (straight), Kanekalon Tiara, and Yaky. I have worked numerous times with the additional hair types listed here.

Q: I don't understand the different hair types... I've heard of so many. Can you explain? A:  I have listed these from closest hair matches, to less of a match.

Nylon - Nylon hair is what was originally used on My Little Ponies. I offer this hair in my online store in exact original 80s and current G3 line colors. Nylon is very easy to curl and hold style (the easiest of all types), it also takes dye very well (again, the best of all types).

Yaky - Yaky hair is known as Yaky Pony, a Toyokalon hair.  This hair is very close to pony hair, I'd give it 90-95%.   Very easy to style, good texture and sheen, and takes dye decently.  Colors are pretty limited in this hair type though, but since it does take dye, there are more possibilities. This hair is a bit thicker then original MLP hair.

Jumbo Braid - Jumbo Braid hair is easily identifiable by it's kinky texture.  This hair needs to be ironed on low heat to straighten.  When straightened and conditioned (in some cases) it has a texture about 80% close to real MLP hair, however it will need some styling to lie flat. Unstraighted the texture is usually quite unruly.

Saran - Saran hair is about 80% identical to My Little Pony hair. It lies flat easily. This hair will take curl only by a boil perm. This hair can be identified by the texture fairly easily... it tends to have a cotton-like feel and a greasy texture. The "grease" in this hair can be taken out with a good shampoo. It does not take dye well.

Kanekalon Tiara - Tiara hair is the highest quality of KaneKalon hair available. It takes to a permanent curl only with a boil perm (see the tutorial). Will lightly take dye.

Kanekalon (straight) - This is the lowest quality of straight Kanekalon hair available. It is very stiff, and colors are very limited. Very hard to curl and usually won't take dye.

Q: I'm taking hair from another pony... How much donor hair do I need to complete my custom? A: An adult pony of regular hair length will take the equilvalent of about 3-4 adult tails (1 for tha mane and 2-3 for the mane).

Q: Which hair types takes RIT dye? A: On a scale of 1-5.  One is little or no change, 5 being equal to real pony/Nylon hair (which REALLY takes dye).

Q: Do you have pictures of synthetic hair that has been dyed? A:  (2 pictures below)

dyedhair15min.jpg

Hair types left to right are: Jumbo Braid (white), Tiara (white), Kanekalon straight (cream), and Yaky (cream).  They were left in Evening Blue rit dye for 15 mins, rinsed and then shampooed till all excess color bled out, then dried and photographed.

I did not do a sample of nylon hair it this time... I can tell you that 15 mins if nylon hair in any dye would have made a VERY dark color! Nylon hair dyes almost instantly. You can see pictures of ponies with dyed nylon hair in the gallery.

Q: How heat resistant is this hair? A: I used an adjustable temperature iron... the setting it was on is on the left... of course, this will vary from iron to iron!   + is good, - means it melted, burned or curled.

Q: Do you have a color match for this G1 pony? A:  Check out the Color Matching section for exact matches!

Q: Do you have a color match for this G3 pony? A: This is a work in progress... but it will be found here.

Q: How do I rehair? A: There are several methods of rehairing.  Please check out the tutorial for the methods I have used.  And of course you can search other websites for other methods.

Q: Have you used a "rehairing tool"? A: Yes, Lady Day Dreamer makes an excellent tool at a reasonable price. You can find her page in the links here.

Q: Why do you charge less then other online hair suppliers? Do I get less hair? A: I will give you MORE hair per skein and charge you much less money per skein. I am a collector so I know what we are all looking for and as a collector I think prices should be fair.  I can afford to charge less because I am a one-person run business.

Q: What does kanekalon jumbo braid look like before/after it is straightened? A:  (picture below)

The left side has been ironed, the right is how it comes out of the bag.

Q: What hair type do you recommend? A:  I recommend Nylon hair not only because it is what is used in all original My Little Ponies, but because it also has the best results for resisting heat and keeping curl.
